Without these skills the best “scientific” forecast may take a backseat to other business considerations.

I think a more holistic understanding of the overall business process should be included in these “soft skills”. Often, different parts of the organization may be influenced by different incentives. For example, the sales organization may want to ensure that there is sufficient inventory on hand to meet customer demand while the operations organization wants to minimize day of supply of finished goods inventory. I believe that the demand planners influence will be increased by understanding the different incentives in different parts of the total business.
